General Information about the Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer event:
One morning to save millions of lives. By participating in or organizing a National Students of AMF Support Network Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer in your community, you will raise awareness about the role that a healthy lifestyle plays in disease prevention, raise money to help fight cancer, and support the loved ones of those affected by cancer.

Much more than a 1-hour outdoor workout, the Boot Camp is a time to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember those who have been lost and to fight back—TO BEAT CANCER. By participating, you have the power to bring us closer toward a future where college students do not have to grieve the death of loved ones.  Until then, a portion of the funds will also go toward helping those college students who do struggle with the loss of a loved one.

Here's how your involvement helps:

Raising Awareness About the Importance of a Healthy Lifestyle in Disease Prevention
Cancer and other diseases are extremely complex and involve a number of uncontrollable events. Nevertheless, there are lifestyle choices that one can take to decrease the risk of a cancer diagnosis.  Therefore, at the event we pass out information about the importance of not smoking, eating healthy, and exercising regularly.

Saving Lives by Raising Money for Cancer Research
Every dollar you raise makes a difference to people in your community whose lives are touched by cancer. For those people and countless others, the research funding will result in better ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. In addition to the medical treatments necessary for a cancer patient to beat cancer, it also takes hope! By participating in the National Students of AMF Support Network Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer, those touched by cancer are given hope to fight even harder.

The National Students of AMF Support Network will also continue to use the power and energy of college students to exert influence on all levels of government, advocating for stronger policies and enacting legislation that will save lives and conquer cancer.

Supporting Those Affected by Cancer and Other Diseases
When cancer or another disease affects someone you love, the National Students of AMF Support Network is here to help and provides inspiration through our many programs and services in the community and through the National Students of AMF’s Web site, www.StudentsofAMF.org and made possible through donations.

All of this is made possible because of activities like the Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer! Are you ready to get involved? It's easy! You can request information about holding a Boot Camp in your community, put together a team if there is already an event in your area or join an existing team at your local event.

So what happens at the Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer?

Members of campus chapters of Students of AMF across the country are committed to fighting cancer and other diseases in their communities year-round, but once a year, they gather at the Boot Camp to Beat Cancer to raise awareness about cancer, fundraise to find new treatments and cures in memory of loves ones, and to inspire those battling the disease to continue to fight.

Each of the Boot Camps nationwide are fun, half-day events that mobilizes communities to celebrate those diagnosed with cancer, remember lost loved ones and raise money to beat cancer. Battalions of five to 15 members gather with the goal of raising the most money and motivating the most people to participate. The Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer brings together friends, families, schools, churches, hospitals, businesses. Battalions seek sponsorship prior to the Boot Camp, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.

Prior to the Boot Camp information about cancer is disseminated at and around the registration table. There you can read about how to prevent or detect cancer, the latest treatment methods, and resources for cancer survivors and their loved ones. Also, participants are encouraged to wear a lost loved one’s name or picture somewhere on them. The Boot Camp opens with cancer patients taking the first lap. This emotional time sets the stage for the importance of each participant's contribution.  Then the Boot Camp participants go to the infield for a 15-minute “Dynamic Warm-up” which gets you ready for the rest of the workout.

Then, participants are given the choice to do a “Relay Walk,” where participants from the team switch off laps around the track, participate in the non-exercise activities that are planned, or to join in for the “Boot Camp.” The Boot Camp involves five 5-minute stations that are lead by local personal trainers, and college and professional athletes. These stations include abs/core, pushups, resistance training, agility training, endurance training, etc. With music playing, participants walking and “boot-camping,” a festive atmosphere always develops as participants make new friends and spend time with old ones.

This event is designed for people of all ages and all exercise levels.

Boot Camp History

One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the National Students of AMF Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer, which began in Raleigh, NC, as the Boot Camp 4 Brain Cancer.
On October 26, 2004, Anne Marie Fajgenbaum lost her 15-month battle with brain cancer.  Two months later her son, David Fajgenbaum decided to fight back by creating and holding the “Inaugural Boot Camp 4 Brain Cancer.”

On an unseasonably warm January 8, 2005, Fajgenbaum and a number of his friends raised over $10,000 with this exercise-based fundraiser for the National Brain Tumor Foundation in memory of Anne Marie.  The event involved 50 middle- and high school-aged athletes participating in a 1.5 hour workout.  The workout included speed, agility, conditioning, and strength exercises.

It was the success of this event that propelled Fajgenbaum to create the National Students of AMF Support Network when he returned to Georgetown.  In addition to providing much needed support to college students affected by having loved ones with diseases like cancer, National Students of AMF motivates college students to fight back against terminal illnesses.   One year later, he pulled together a small committee to plan the another Boot Camp, this time, known as the Boot Camp 2 Beat Cancer.

In May 2006, over 100 people participated in the Second Annual "Boot Camp to Beat
Cancer" and raised $20,000.  More than just achieving the three goals of raising awareness about the role that a healthy lifestyle plays in disease prevention, generating funding for research into detection, prevention, treatment and a cure for cancer, and supporting college students affected by diseases like cancer through the National Students of AMF Support Network, the Boot Camp provided an indescribable sense of hope among cancer patients and accomplishment among those who participated.

"It was just an unbelievable effort and an incredible day," said Fajgenbaum. "We had a great turnout, we were able to provide a day of fun for everyone who came by and we raised a tremendous amount of money for this cause."
